Last weekend my husband I visited the ‘Festival des Métiers’ an event put on by Hermès at the MCA in Sydney.
And what a wonderful surprise it was! This was not your usual luxury fashion and accessories exhibition - this was an experience where you got to immerse yourself completely in the parallel universe of luxury goods, a place where you got to rub shoulders with some of the world’s cleverest artisans, have a chat, ask dumb questions and be enlightened by their honesty, simplicity and sheer brilliance.
They come from towns from all over France (except for the watchmaker), usually the town that’s renowned for their particular field of endeavour. And yes, of course they all work for Hermès, but that’s just because they’re most likely the very best at what they do.
In an ever increasingly fast forward world, let me just say, being able to watch someone at their work, with this amount patience, dedication and skill was an almost spiritual experience and a very rare privilege.
Meeting and seeing these gifted artisans at their work gave me an insight into the extraordinary lengths Hermès goes to to achieve perfection in a mostly imperfect world.
And the price of entry into this perfect world? No Charge.
If you ever hear this event is coming to a city near you, don’t think about it… just go.
All I can say is… wow!
